This little man arrived to PRM’s care a few weeks ago. He was handed over to a shelter worker by a man who said “sorry” and then walked out of the building. Rudy’s rear back paw had a large, gaping open wound and he was unable to put any weight on that leg.

GRAPHIC INFORMATION: Sadly, we have no idea how Rudy’s injury exactly occurred, however, we know it was by a sharp object . The bones in his foot were literally sliced right in half by something sharp, and his muscles, vessels and nerves were also cut. Our vet was able to amputate only Rudy’s toes and pads so that he still has full use of his back leg. He’s healing extremely well and is on his way to making a completely recovery.

We’re happy that Rudy is almost ready to have a “normal puppyhood”, and he’s eager too! He’ll happily chew on his visitors’ fingers and hair, loves toys and loves to play! She’s a wonderful girl with an even temperament, laidback and loves to be leaning and touching you at all times.

Sadly, after a complete workup at our vet’s office, we discovered our sweet girl is filled with cancer. Our vet removed 2 large tumors and 1 small tumor, but she has 20-30 small tumors throughout her coat. Her biopsies came back as multiple mast cell tumors. He has won over the hearts of all of the vet techs who are caring for him, and he happily slobbers on any of his visitors.

Please, help us to save this handsome horse of a dog!

Winnie's puppies are HERE!

Winnie's puppies are here! He has a face you cant help but squish and kiss paired with a wiggle-y body! He really is just too cute for words, especially when you meet him in person; he ALWAYS puts a smile on your face. Dudley weighs about 50 pounds, is up to date on shots and will be neutered prior to adoption.

Unfortunately, Dudley's start has been a bit rocky, but we are determined to get him a brighter future. He was found as a stray, laying down in someones front yard. A passenger saw him and worried he had been hit by a car and animal control swiftly came and picked him up. Dudley has NO muscle mass in his rear legs and has developed a gimpy walk to accommodate for it. The shelter vet believes he has an old injury to his hip and that he wasnt recently hit by a car.

No one came back to claim Duds as their dog, so we rescued him from the shelter as soon as his stray time was up! He is currently staying at our veterinary office, having x-rays taken and receiving the medical care he so desperately deserves. Stay tuned for updates once we and our vet figure out what is going on!

It wont be long before Dudley is ready to be adopted so feel free to inquire and set up a time to meet him, he wont disappoint! Duds is dog friendly; he rode in the car with another dog to the vets office and they both were kissing each other through the crate.

As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. She was found as a stray along with her brother at only 4 weeks of age, with no mother in site. Her rescuer wanted to keep them, but could not afford the extensive medical treatment they needed, and was forced to surrender them to a local animal shelter.

Tuna and her brother were both suffering from severe eye infections, to the point where the eye was already eaten away by the infection. Sadly, Tuna's brother made it through surgery at the shelter, but lost his battle while recovering afterwards. Tuna has now been transferred to our care and his currently staying at our veterinary hospital. She is approximately 12 weeks old and sure seems to be a fighter. She is very skinny and our vet is working hard to get some weight on her before she goes in for eye surgery. The rest of her eye is nonfunctional and needs to be removed.

Tuna is mostly black with a little bit of white on her chest and a medium-to-long hair coat with bright blue eyes. She is EXTREMELY friendly and purrs like a motor when you hold her. She was born with a deformed right front paw which she is unable to use, and her owners were going to have her euthanized merely because of her leg. A kind woman bought Sassy for $25 to save her from this slated death and reached out to us for help.

Sassy is currently staying at our veterinary hospital where her leg will have to be amputated. It currently drags on the ground and she is unable to use it at all. Without it, she won't be weighed down and will be able to run and freely like other puppies.

Sassy weighs only 9 pounds and is extremely sweet. She loves to be held and give tiny puppy kisses. She is a little shy, but you can tell she warms up quickly from the little wags of her tail. She gets along great with both other dogs and cats.

Sassy's vet bills are projected to be over $1200 and we are asking for your help in funding this necessary surgery for sweet Sassy. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. Chili was found as a stray with bilateral cherry eyes, a prolapse in the gland of the dog's third eyelid. Chili's eyesight is currently limited because he can't see out of either of his full eyes. Chili weighs only 23 pounds and has an extremely handsome blue, fluffy coat. We believe he is approximately 2-3 years old. We're taking your guesses on what on earth he may be mixed with - for now we think maybe Basset Hound, as he is long and low to the ground. But as for the coat and that color - we have no idea!

Chili is still unsure of what's going on - he's been passed around from shelter to vet and is patiently waiting for someone to bring him home and snuggle up on the couch with him. He is shy at first, but warms up quickly, especially with the help of cookies! He gets along fine with other dogs and cats.

We have surgically treated this sweet boy's cherry eye in both of his eyes, however we are desperately in need of donations for his eye surgeries. Pregnant. Scared. Meet WINNIE....

UPDATE DECEMBER 2010: Winnie's puppies are here! Born on November 10, she is the proud mama to 6 boys and 3 girls. Two of the puppies were not thriving and had to be separated and bottlefed, but they have now turned the corner and are doing well. The litter had some conjunctivitis and a viral infection so are a little smaller than they should be, but they just started eating mush and are growing and getting stronger every day!

The two bottlefeeder puppies were diagnosed with juvenile pyoderma, a completely treatable case of what looks like "puppy pimples" or dermatitis. They are both now on antibiotics and responding well. We are NOT accepting applications yet and the puppies will not be available until January 2011.

We are still desperately in need of donations for Winnie's second surgery for the cherry eye, her spay and pin removal, as well as for the veterinary care for all of her puppies. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. We're also in great need of Blue Buffalo Puppy food for them. Pregnant. Scared. Winnie was abandoned in a local park by her cowardly owners, found with a homemade splint on her rear left leg. A good samaritan brought her to the shelter and we rescued her once the stray time was up. She also has a severe case of cherry eye, a prolapse in the gland of the dog's third eyelid.

Winnie was transferred to our care and brought immediately to our veterinary hospital to provide her the orthopedic surgery necessary to save her leg. Up until now, everyone was so focused on saving her leg, that the few suspicions that she may be pregnant seemed to have been hushed. Our vet performed an ultrasound first, revealing Winnie was pregnant with one, two, three, four, five, at least SIX puppies. We followed up with an x-ray a week later that confirmed she is pregnant with at least nine puppies.

The good news is that our veterinarian was able to safely perform the necessary surgery now to insert a pin and correct Winnie's broken leg. It was too risky to correct the cherry eye at the same time, but she'll be able to be spayed, have the pin removed and the cherry eye corrected a few months after the puppies are born.

Because Winnie was a stray, we'll never know where she came from, what she's experienced (or even who her baby daddy is!) However, despite it all, she is the most amazing, kind, gentle and loving dog we have yet to rescue. She is incredibly sweet and friendly to all of the veterinarians, vet techs and other animals in the hospital. She generously gives out kisses to all those who greet her and is happy to curl up in your lap and snuggle.

Winnie is due the week of November 8th. We know there are at least 9 puppies, but it is very probable that there will be more. We are desperately in need of donations for Winnie's surgeries and medical care, as well as the care for her somewhat-unexpected puppies to be. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. She was extremely lethargic and not eating. Thankfully, a good Samaritan pulled over and rescued her, and drove her to a local animal hospital who contacted us for help. Celestina is extremely underweight and suffering from a skin condition that caused her to lose most of her hair. Her ears are bleeding and oozing, signs of an extreme infection that has gone untreated for far too long. She is in extreme discomfort from her ears and will likely need surgery to help them heal. She is currently thriving on the love, care and medical attention she is recieving, but still has a long road to recovery.

Read more about Celestina here >>> http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17059795

Wishbone is a 8-week old kitten who was found near a local cemetary, alone, filthy and malnourished. When we came to her rescue, we found she had been limping around on a broken back leg. She was rushed to the vet and x-rays showed a severe fracture just above her knee. The surgery to save her leg was completely successful and a metal pin was inserted to stabilize her leg. She's currently in foster care learing how to walk with her repaired leg, but still faces another operation in 4 weeks to remove the pin. Although she has endured so much in her short life, she is extremely affectionate and loving, and just loves to nuzzle her head against your warm hand.
Read more about Wishbone here >>> http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17057772

Norman is an incredible 5-year old German Shepherd who was found abandoned along with his brother. We know there are German Shepherd lovers out there that will just scoop this boy up. He is a fantastic dog and everyone has good things to say about him. Read on to learn more about this incredible dog who has overcome so many obstacles, all he needs now is his loving family to find and adopt him.

Norman was brought to the shelter as a stray along with his older brother, Otis. They were found trying to cross a major highway in central NJ when animal control was called and picked them up. Both boys were extremely underweight, and Norman especially was emaciated. He is a tall boy at 76 pounds and is slowly gaining weight, but still has approximately 15 pounds to gain.

Their owners never came back for them, and neither Norman nor Otis were doing well in the shelter. Not eating and very depressed - the shelter staff even offered these boys Burger King, and while just Norman ate two burgers one day, neither was interested the next day. To make matters worse, both had developed a severe upper respiratory infection.

Their time was running low and with a holiday weekend coming up, the shelter management was concerned with them staying there all weekend in such poor condition. They needed immediate medical intervention and IV nutritional support, or they would not make it.

When we got the email about these boys one Friday morning, we knew their fate was in our hands. Despite the fact that we were full as usual, I found myself on the way to the shelter to pick them up. When I met Norman, he was laying sprawled out on the indoor part of the kennel run. He was so skinny, but managed to find the strength to lift up his head and greet me.

Otis was laying in the corner of the outside part of the run. His eyes followed me, but he did not even have the strength to lift up his head. His coat was a grooming disaster, he reeked of urine and his nose was caked over with snot. But his eyes said so much. Despite his pitiful state and past neglect, it was clear he was a beautiful dog. I choked back tears as I tried to get out the words let's load them up.

Although he was the skinnier of the two, Norman was able to walk to the car. Otis had to be carried. On the car ride from the shelter to the vet's, Norman actually climbed over the backseat, came and nuzzled his head under my arm, and then returned to the back to be with his brother. Dogs are just incredible.

I rushed to the hospital and as I unloaded Norman, Otis picked his head up and the expression of gratitude in his eyes is something that will forever be engrained in my memory. I gave him a kiss and brought Norman inside. Two vet technicians carried Otis straight into the back to get him on fluids, and Norman was brought back shortly after.

Otis

Otis sadly passed over the rainbow bridge that evening. In addition to his weak state and upper respiratory, he had a large, cancerous tumor in his mouth. It is extremely devastating, but we are content that he experienced kindness and love from humans on his last day.

Our vet was confident that Norman would make it, and he was right. He did not have any underlying health issues and just needed to build up strength to battle the upper respiratory infection. Norman had been staying in isolation at our veterinary hospital for the past 4 weeks. His appetite has increased, although his favorite meal remains the pot roast dinner that he shared with our veterinarian. Norman has charmed over everyone at the vet's office, they are all in love with him there. He gets along excellent with other dogs, cats and kids.

Norman's upper respiratory infection is no longer contagious and he is currently in a foster home. There is a lingering sneeze here and there, but Norman is feeling much better. All he needs now is to gain some more weight and he'll be all set. He is about 5 years old, neutered and up to date on shots, and will weight approximately 90 pounds when at a healthy weight.

Norman is calm, loving, sweet and friendly. He will be fine in a home with other animals or kids. He is not extremely energetic, bouncy or over the top hyper. He wants to just hang out with his family, lounge on the couch and maybe take a short walk once or twice a day. He is happiest when you are rubbing his ears and if you stop, he'll just nudge in closer to get some more love.

Please contact us if you are interested in meeting, adopting or learning more about this fantastic dog.

Hero update!

Hero's stitches came out earlier this week! His wound is almost completely healed and he just has a little scab there. He has some scar tissue that our vet considered surgically removing, but we have decided to hold off for now. Since he is so young, he doesn't want to put him under anesthesia again. If he still has scar tissue when he is old enough to be neutered, our vet will remove it then and do some cosmetic surgery.

Hero is currently in a foster home and is ready to find his forever home. He is finally learning what its like to be a real puppy. He is working on crate training, housebreaking and other basic puppy manners. He loves to run around, chew on his chew toys and cuurl up and cuddle with you once he's all played up.

Help puppy HERO!

Meet our sweet little HERO. Hero is just a baby at 5-weeks old and arrived at the shelter with a huge laceration crossing over his back from one rear leg to the other. The shelter cleaned and flushed the wound, and then contacted rescue immediately, knowing he needed more medical attention and to get out of the shelter environment as soon as possible.

Hero is currently staying at our vet’s office where the wound was closed and is draining. It had become infected and this little pup is working on fighting that off too. This poor little puppy was allegedly attacked by another dog, but the wound is not from another dog. Although no one wants to out right say it, a very sharp object did this to this poor baby. It’s so horrible.

Hero is stable, but wants nothing more than to sleep and cuddle. It’s hard for him to get comfortable with the wound, but we know he’ll be a normal, bouncy puppy in just a few more weeks. Hero will soon be looking for a loving family to make up for his horrendous, sad start.

An update on SAMSON

New pictures of Samson!!

Here is a long overdue update on our wonderful Samson. He is now ready to find his forever home! His wounds are healing extremely well and he has gained a lot of weight. His bones will build up more strength and his toes look like webbed feet (from malnutrition), but he is walking around now. He can’t run or move fast yet but hopefully soon!

Our vet’s office is working on socializing him and he hangs out in their offices most of the time. He wanders around the clinic a lot when it’s not busy, but he stays right by everyone’s side. He is madly in love with one of the female vets and he sleeps at her feet when she’s in her office.

The vet’s office had the local pre-school stop in last week for a 15 minute tour. One of the vet techs said she heard squeals and at first thought Gibson was being mouthy - ended up he was just so happy to see the kids. He couldn't decide which child he wanted to go to first and was running up and down the line. He loved the kids and was wonderful with them.

Samson LOVES other dogs and is acting more and more like a puppy everyday. His personality is just wonderful. PRM and Samson would like to THANK YOU ALL for the wonderful outpour of support for this sweet, special dog. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer is still in need of donations for Samson’s vet care.

SAVING SAMSON

Please be warned that Samson’s story is devastating and the pictures can be graphic. He looks the size of a 4-month old puppy, and we believe his growth was stunted, and he may not get much bigger. He was found in the basement of an abandoned home, unable to stand or walk, extremely emaciated and dehydrated.

The shelter believes that Samson was severely abused: dragged and tortured. He has multiple, seriously infected open wounds on his hind legs, knees, ankles and feet. One of the wounds on his knee is especially severe, and the tissues are dead and necrotic. His paws are splayed due to malnutrition and he was unable to get up and walking. X-rays have not revealed any breaks yet and it may just be the extent and pain from his open wounds. X-rays of his stomach show that this baby was eating rocks and dirt, probably in an attempt to survive.

The shelter began treatment for Samson’s wounds and sent out an emergency plea, knowing he would heal much faster outside of the shelter environment. One look into Samson’s eyes and our rescue responded immediately.

Samson arrived at our veterinary hospital on April 19 in the evening, and we will post updates on his prognosis as they are available.

UPDATE April 21: The shelter bandaged Samson up and he was brought to the safety of our veterinary hospital. He curled up into a little ball on the front passenger seat in the car and did not budge the whole ride! Our veterinarian determined Sam is only about 6 months old and he weighs a whopping 25 pounds. He confirmed that Samson was dragged, as his paw pads are completely shorn off. Fortanately, they will grow back with time. Most of his open wounds will heal with time and TLC, however, the one large wound on his knee will require skin grafts. Samson will be going in for surgery on Thursday, April 22 to have skin grafts performed on his knee. Please continue to keep him in your thoughts, he still has a long road to recovery!

Now, we are asking for your help in saving Samson’s life. Read on to learn more about this incredible dog who has overcome so many obstacles, all he needs now is his forever home.

His story...

Rudy suffered from major trauma before he walked through the doors of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Sadly, we'll never know what exactly happened to Rudy, but it was devastating. He arrived a physical mess. Underweight and had major neurological troubles with walking. The shelter also feared Rudy has problems with seeing and hearing.

Yet, Rudy was one of the lucky ones. His past was rough but he made it out with his life. Even more importantly, his love for humans is intact. He has no fear, no aggression towards humans, and greets everyone with his tail-wagging, wiggly butt.

The shelter worked to nurse Rudy back to health, but they are limited in the amount of care they can give. He greatly improved medically and was able to put up for adoption.

Rudy sat in a cage for months, watching everyone walk right by him. No one would adopt a dog with such an intense medical history, let alone a pit bull with medical issues!

This fantastic dog, again, had to beat unbelievable odds. He had to make it out of a shelter that regularly already has a 40% euthanasia rate. The spread of disease in another shelter in Philadelphia had caused the shelter to temporarily shut down, and the 150 dogs had to be transferred to the PSPCA. As a result of space constraints, Rudy was now on the urgent list.

His present...

One of PRM's volunteers had met him previously during a shelter visit, and when she saw Rudy on the urgent list, she could not stop thinking about his happy, wiggle butt self. We knew what fate would happen to him if we did not come to his rescue.

So, we made arrangements and drove to Philadelphia to pick up this special boy. He lacked confidence outside of the shelter, and had to be picked up into the car. He slept the whole ride home back to NJ without making a peep, just curled up, enjoying the peace and quiet.

Rudy's first step was our veterinary office, to find out everything about what's going on. Once again, Rudy had more luck. He can both hear and see fine. Our vet x-rayed his pelvis and it also his perfectly fine. Yes, he wobbles when he walks, his gait isn't the steadiest, but he is not in any pain, and Rudy seems perfectly happy and content with his condition.

Yes, Rudy walks funny. It's cute in its own way. But other than that, he does not have any long-term medical issues. He is up to date on shots, neutered and only about 1-2 years old and 45-50 pounds.

Rudy is fine with other dogs and would probably be okay with cats too. He is not very energetic, hyper or over-the-top bouncy. A walk or two a day and he will be more than happy to hang out with you around the house or snuggle up on the sofa.

His future...

Rudy faces just one last obstacle. He needs an end to his story. A home to come home to. And we know with his luck, he'll find the most wonderful family. Maybe with you?

Blizzard, a snowstorm rescue!

One of PRM’s volunteers was at the shelter picking up another dog when she saw Blizzard. Immediately this sweet girl began giving kisses through the gate and rolling over for belly rubs in her cage. Needless to say, she packed her up in the car and brought her home too!

Blizzard is a sweet 1-year old lab mix who was found early February in the midst of one of the big blizzards. She had been hit by a car and her rear legs were suffering from serious injuries and abrasions. Her back right leg was severely injured to the point that the bone was exposed, and dirt and grit from the road had gotten into her exposed wounds.

The shelter cleaned her wounds and changed her bandages daily, and Blizzard slowly started to recover. Once PRM pulled her, we brought her straight to our veterinary hospital to find out if anything else could be done to help heal her injuries. This sweetheart was seized by animal cruelty agents due to unsanitary conditions. She waited at the shelter for 4 months until the case was resolved and she could go up for adoption.

Unfortunately, the problems didn’t stop there. At the shelter, Maggie developed a skin condition – a bad rash on her belly and her feet became so raw, sore, swollen and bloody that she couldn’t even walk!

It was originally thought her skin issues were due to severe allergies to the kennel disinfectant; the shelter sent out a plea and we responded. As soon as we met Maggie we loaded her in the car and were on our way – WHAT A SWEETHEART! She is an amazing, friendly, sweet doll of a dog.

In combination with the allergic reaction to the disinfectant, our vet determined Maggie also has demodex mange on her feet. Magoo was surrendered to a high-kill shelter in Philadelphia because his owners could not afford to medically care for his injured hind left leg.

We saw Magoo’s face and had to help save him. He arrived at our veterinary office on February 22nd and we are anxiously waiting to hear his prognosis.

UPDATE 2/24/10: We are happy to announce that Magoo does not need surgery, so he is ready for adoption now! Our vet determined he had a femoral fracture that healed the wrong way because he was never treated at the time of injury. As a result, the one leg is slightly shorter, but Magoo is in NO PAIN at all and gets around just fine!

Magoo is an incredibly sweet and loving dog. He’s just a puppy around 6 months old and weighs about 43 pounds. He is an American Bulldog mix, possibly with pit, but we’ll never know for sure. He is mostly white in color and has an underbite that you just can’t help but fall in love with!

Magoo is great with handing and loves to give gentle kisses. He previously lived with kids and has done well when meeting other dogs and cats.

SWEET SISTERS NEED LOVING HOME TOGETHER

Madison and Mojo are two gorgeous, dainty 7-8 year old sisters looking for a forever home together. Someone spotted her and called animal control, she was brought to the local shelter and then transferred to our care.

This poor girl is just skin and bones, unbelievable skinny. She was so weak she was unable to even lift her head, let alone walk, the first day she arrived. Baby was so dirty it took two baths at the shelter to even make a dent in getting her clean, and her should-be-white legs are still stained brown. We are still horrified to think that someone could let this happen to her, but relieved to know she will never suffer again.

Baby is currently staying at our veterinary office, where she is receiving fluids, heat, food and some much needed TLC, for probably the first time in her life. She has a great appetite and is eating 4-5 times a day. Although she was starved, she is not food aggressive. We’re waiting on results from a urinalysis, fecal and bloodwork, but in just 1 day she is already gaining strength.

UPDATE 01/18/2010: Baby's tests results came back, her fecal, urinalysis and bloodwork all look good. This poor girl is so emaciated because she was malnourished, starved. Fortanately, after just a few days at the vet's office, Baby is quickly regaining strength and is able to go for short walks. She still has a long road until she is completely recovered and back to a good weight, but her prognosis looks great!

Now, we are asking for your help in saving Baby’s life. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. Baby’s vet bills are projected to be at least $1100 and they are quickly mounting. We desperately need your support for Baby. Contributions can be made online through our website www.petrescueofmercer.org or mailed directly to us at Pet Rescue of Mercer, P.O. Box 2574, Hamilton, NJ 08690.

We can’t believe what this poor girl has made it through already, and we are asking for your support to give her a chance at life. She is a wonderful dog, so sweet and loving with everyone. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

UPDATE: Shelby, chemically burned black lab mix pup

UPDATE 1/28/2010: Sweet Shelby stayed at our vet's hospital for approximately two weeks while her burns healed, due to major infection she needed to be cleaned up about 4 times a day. We are now happy to report that she has been adopted by a loving family and is settling well into her new home!

Poor Shelby was found off an exit ramp of a major highway in Camden County, covered in scabbed-over wounds. She was discarded like trash out into the bitter cold of winter, but fortunately she was brought to the local shelter and has made her way safely to rescue.

Although the wounds looked to be healing, after her bath, the scabs fell off and revealed infected tissue covering almost all of her body. We suspect this was caused by chemical burns. Shelby is currently staying at our veterinary office, where she will receive the much needed treatment for her burns.

Although it is likely she will always have physical scars, Shelby does not let her past faze her. She is a bit on the shy side, but very sweet and wags her tail at the sight of a helping hand. If you sit on the ground and talk to her, you’ll soon find her in your lap, licking your chin.

As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. We desperately need your support to save Shelby. Contributions can be made online through our website www.petrescueofmercer.org or mailed directly to us at Pet Rescue of Mercer, P.O. She’s full grown at approximately 40 pounds and is only about 1 year old. She is ready to start charming potential adopters, so if you’re looking to rescue an abandoned soul, or have fallen in love with her big puppy dog eyes, come and meet her!

Sweet Caroline...

Meet our Sweet Caroline, she just wishes good times never seemed so good.

This gentle soul was seized from her owners due to neglect. She was absolutely emaciated and just bones. She also had an injury to her rear left leg and she had been limping, not bearing any weight on it.

Unable to let this sweetie suffer anymore, we pulled Caroline from the shelter and brought her straight to meet our vet. The vet has determined that she was likely hit by a car, and damage has been done to both the growth plate on the knee and the hip bone. Her knee can be left alone, however there is a bone chip in her hip causing bone to rub up against bone, and it must be removed. Caroline will have her operation on Monday, January 11 and updates will be posted once they are available.

Caroline is just under 1 year old and weighs about 30 lbs. One of her eyes is partially blue. While we have no idea of her mix, we are guessing she is Italian greyhound or whippet, possibly mixed with pit. This girl is a true doll, all she wants is to sit in between your legs and be pet and loved. She’s friendly with other dogs too.

She’ll be going into foster care once released from the vet hospital while she waits for her forever home. She’s up to date on shots and will be spayed with adoption.

Update on Bella, the baby found in the trash

Our sweet Bella, the puppy found in a trash phile in the alley, is healing wonderfully! Cindy Lou is an absolutely gorgeous black pit bull terrier / bulldog mix. She has an adorable underbite, weighs 32 pounds and is just a puppy at only 12 months old. She arrived at the shelter hit by a car and needed immediate surgery to repair her left hind leg. The shelter does not have the facilities for extensive surgeries, and her leg would have been amputated had she not gotten out safely.

Fortunately for Cindy Lou, one of our volunteers fell in love and was determined to save her. After seeing her x-rays, we suspect she may have been beaten and not hit by a car. On December 16 she arrived at our veterinary hospital and we are eagerly awaiting from our veterinarian to hear her prognosis. She will be in need of a foster or forever home in a week or so once she is healing.

We are extremely grateful for the generous donation from one amazing individual for Cindy Lou’s surgery. However, we are still in need for your help in saving Cindy Lou Who’s leg. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. Cindy Lou’s vet bills are projected to be at least $1500 and they are quickly mounting. We desperately need your support for Cindy Lou Who. Contributions can be made online through our website www.petrescueofmercer.org or mailed directly to us at Pet Rescue of Mercer, P.O. He’s neutered, microchipped, up to date on all shots and ready for you to bring him home! Kirby was rescued one day before he was scheduled to be euthanized from a local, high-kill shelter. Brody was hit by a car the weekend of September 5th. His owners rushed him to their vet and an emergency veterinary center, but were unable to afford the projected veterinary costs. His owners brought him to the local shelter to be euthanized.

Brody has a very deep wound on his left front leg to the point that his bone is exposed. Being a lab puppy, he chewed on his bandages at the shelter which only made things worse.

The shelter reached out to rescues and we could not resist helping this little labby boy. He is currently staying at our veterinary hospital and we are anxiously waiting to hear if we will be able to save his leg or if it will need to be amputated.

UPDATE 11/26/09: Congratulations, Brody! We are happy to announce that Brody is home just in time for Thanksgiving – he’s packed up his bags and kissed all of his good friends at the vet’s goodbye! He's been adopted by wonderful, loving lab people and now has a huge yard and Chihuahua sister all to himself!

Brody no longer has an exercise restriction and is able to run and play at will! His leg is almost now completely healed, there are two more open wounds that are slowly closing and his fur is growing back. We'd like to thank everyone who has followed Brody's story and all of the supporters who donated towards his care.

PICTURES FROM BRODY’S ADOPTION DAY:

UPDATE 11/16/09: Brody had some setbacks in the healing of his leg that pushed back his date to be released to foster care. However, our veterinarian is confident that he will be able to leave the hospital by the end of next week. Brody has not had any bandages on for about a week now and we are just waiting for one little area of his leg to heal.

Brody is now ready to start looking for his forever family, and we’re hoping he’ll be able to leave the vet’s office and start his new life. Brody is looking for born and bred lab people, he really is a guy that lab people just can’t get enough of! Although Brody’s leg will not need any long-term medical care, we are not recommending that he be placed in a home with young children and a fenced yard is a must.

UPDATE 10/26/09: Brody is tentatively scheduled to have his bandages and sutures removed on Thursday and if all goes well, he'll be released into foster care on Monday! Almost there, Brody!

UPDATE 10/20/09: Brody Boy is still in the hospital, but is a week or two away from going to foster care! Our veterinarian is working hard on keeping him still long enough, as well as keeping him bandaged, so that Brody can properly heal. Being a lab puppy, and in the midst of his second teething stage, Brody LOVES to chew his bandages – even with the cone on! He now has on a body bandage in the hopes that Brody can’t get through it.

UPDATE 09/27/09: Brody had a major vein ripped out of his leg when he was hit by a car, and his leg is still swollen. The veins will compensate, but until then, he has to stay at the hopsital in order to heal. Hopefully soon this sweetie's next update will be from a home!

UPDATE 09/10/09: Although severe infection had already set in, Brody responded immediately to the IV antibiotics and removal of dead tissue. Lengthy surgery was performed, and after numerous skin grafts and 150 stitches later, Brody’s leg was able to be saved. Brody is recovering well so far, and more updates will be posted as they are available.

PRM would like to thank all of Brody’s followers for the support and donations. He has received over $650 in donations towards his care and a grant for $500 from LABMED, an organization for labs in need. PRM and Brody are so appreciative for the help we have received – his vet bills have now reached over $1700 and we still need your support to care for this special boy.

Now, we are asking for your help in saving Brody’s leg. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. Brody’s vet bills are projected to be at least $1500 and they are quickly mounting. We desperately need your support for Brody. Contributions can be made online through our website www.petrescueofmercer.org or mailed directly to us at Pet Rescue of Mercer, P.O. Box 2574, Hamilton, NJ 08690.

Please visit our home page for a link to donate directly towards Brody's fund:

http://www.petrescueofmercer.org/

Throughout this whole ordeal, Brody is still a sweet, fun-loving lab puppy. He has won over the hearts of all of the vet techs who are caring for him, and all he does is wag his tail. He also freely gives kisses to anyone who scratches his ears.

Please, help us to save this gorgeous, green-eyed chocolate boy!

Meet Cleopatra!

Cleo is an absolutely stunning 12-18 month old female, purebred Cane Corso Mastiff. She currently weighs about 85 lbs. but needs to pack on another 10 lbs. This blue beauty was brought to the shelter with a prolapsed vulva.

Her owner wanted her to be “fixed” so that she could still have puppies that he could sell. Miraculously, the shelter woman was able to convince her owner to surrender her over, and she immediately reached out to us for help.

This poor girl was in so much discomfort, but fortunately just had surgery to correct her condition and she was spayed at the same time. She is also now up to date on shots.

Miss Cleo is SWEET, SWEET, SWEET. She seems to be fine with other dogs and the cats in the veterinary office scared her. And with people – forget it! She loves to roll over for belly rubs and soak in all the love she can get.

UPDATE 09/10/09: Although severe infection had already set in, Brody responded immediately to the IV antibiotics and removal of dead tissue. Hopefully soon this sweetie's next update will be from a home!

PRM would like to thank all of Brody’s followers for the support and donations. He has received over $320 in donations towards his care and a grant for $500 from LABMED, an organization for labs in need. PRM and Brody are so appreciative for the help we have received – his vet bills have now reached over $1700 and we still need your support to care for this special boy.

UPDATE 10/26/09: Brody is tentatively scheduled to have his bandages and sutures removed on Thursday and if all goes well, he'll be released into foster care on Monday! Almost there, Brody!

Click here to Donate to Brody's fund

Now, we are asking for your help in saving Brody’s leg. As an all volunteer, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Pet Rescue of Mercer relies heavily on your donations to continue saving lives. Brody’s vet bills are projected to be at least $1500 and they are quickly mounting. We desperately need your support for Brody. Contributions can be made online through our website www.petrescueofmercer.org or mailed directly to us at Pet Rescue of Mercer, P.O. He has won over the hearts of all of the vet techs who are caring for him, and all he does is wag his tail. He also freely gives kisses to anyone who scratches his ears.

Please, help us to save this gorgeous, green-eyed chocolate boy!

MONA NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

UPDATE ON MONA 9/1/09: Mona was too active for her leg to be splinted, so our veterinarian had to insert a plate in her leg to keep the bone in place and prevent further fracturing.

Meet sweet Mona, a beautiful and loving 8-month old red nosed pit bull. This girl was brought to the shelter by several kids who found her as a stray. Dakota was brought to a local shelter with a severe case of demodectic mange from head to toe. She still has some scabs and sores, and has a lot of hair to grow back, but she is doing well with her treatment. Despite her condition, she has a great personality and loves being a silly puppy. She's a cuddler and will sit right on top of you while watching tv. She loves dogs and really loves to play with cats...if only they would play back! She loves her toys, especially balls and is learning how to play catch. She hasn't quite caught on to catching it in her mouth yet, but she will gladly give the ball back to keep trying. Dakota is crate trained, potty trained, and knows how to sit, stay and come. She is willing to learn so much more. Dakota would love to go to a home that will enjoy her spunky personality and let her be the fun puppy she loves being.

Heartbroken Puppies ♥

Eduardo and Estaban are two 10-week old Chihuahua mix puppies rescued from a house in Trenton.
